Of all the U.S design trends in recent years, New York loft style has resonated the most. Like the industrial buildings it emerged from in the late 1980's, loft style simply lasts and lasts. This 'warehouse style' Is also an aesthetic Peter Bowles embraced 20 years ago when he launched Original BTC. "My aim was to create lights that are relaxed, familiar and will sit comfortably for many years to come," explains Peter – which perfectly sums up loft style's appeal.
Unprocessed. Characterful.
"Stripped back and elegant, loft style is all about allowing the fabric of the building to shine through," continues Director Charlie Bowles, "which is exactly how we design our collections. We celebrate the natural beauty of quality materials, from hand-blown glass to brass, copper and bone china. Unprocessed, characterful, with a story to tell – that’s what our lights are all about."
While Original BTC launched with a nod to the past, Davey Lighting is firmly rooted in Britain's industrial history. Founded in the shipyards of 19th century London, Davey's catalogue of authentic and faithfully reproduced designs - from Spun Reflector Pendants to Box Wall Lights - are the epitome of warehouse style. Loft style living focuses on creating an impactful, open plan space, highlighting and celebrating elements of the building's heritage.
"Original industrial buildings can be a little rough around the edges, so it's vital to invest in quality pieces to achieve that perfect high/low mix," says Charlie.
History and Authenticity
Exposed brickwork, beams and vast windows are instantly evocative of loft style. From distressed finishes to interesting textures and patina, it's a look that instantly communicates history, translating equally well in contract and residential schemes. Take a walk through most cities and you'll spot the hallmarks of the industrial, or loft style, look – from cafes with rows of factory lights, metro tiles and vintage shop fittings to boutique hotels including The Ace Group, who use our lights in their London and Toronto outposts.
One of the keys to successful open plan living is creating zones. Lighting is a particularly effective tool, softening minimalist spaces and creating focal points or highlighting areas of interest.
While we're not all lucky enough to live or work in old schools or converted factories, there are many elements of the loft-style look that can be incorporated into contemporary as well as more traditional interiors. From exposed brickwork, polished concrete floors and Crittall-style windows to lighting, remember that a sense of history and authenticity is key.
