The Bare Minimum |
FLOS unveils its involvement in London's new Design Museum, now opened in the spectacular location of the former Commonwealth Institute building on High Street Kensington.
Partnering with Universal Design Studio founders, Edward Barber & Jay Osgerby, FLOS has created a new lamp for the tables of the museum's Parabola restaurant and members lounge. Custom-made to be portable and rechargeable, Bellhop is a cordless lamp that provides very comfortable, low glare illumination thanks to the innovative Edge Lighting technology. The navy blue, powder-coated, spun aluminum lamp offers six hours of battery life at full power after three hours of USB charging. The name has been inspired by the archetypal hatted hotel porter and also pays homage to its characterful, curvaceous bell shape.
In addition, FLOS has supplied Parabola with a selection of its other iconic lights from its Home Collection including Taccia Small, created by the Castiglioni brothers in 1962, and Jasper Morrison's Mini Glo-Ball, designed in 2002. There will also be a selection of FLOS lights for sale in the museum shop.
"For over 50 years, FLOS has been linked to the most prestigious art, architecture and design museums across the world: numerous products feature in the permanent collections of leading international institutions. We are therefore very honoured to be involved in the new Design Museum, a worldwide cultural landmark. We are also delighted to be partnering with our friends Edward and Jay to develop the new, contemporary Bellhop lamp mark a new design adventure." – said FLOS CEO Piero Gandini.
"The Design Museum is delighted to be working with Flos who have created an elegant lighting scheme for the museum's restaurant and members lounge. Flos have a tradition of working with the best designers to create lights that complement and enhance their surroundings. The lights that we have chosen for the restaurant create a subtle atmosphere that do exactly that." – commented Alice Black, the Design Museum Deputy Director.
